Selection and Application of Clinical Outcome Measures
(Lampros Press, 2026) Gausiya Khan, Namrata Suri, Abdur Raheem Khan
Outcome measurement is an essential component of physiotherapy practice that provides a systematic method for assessing patient status, functional ability. disability, symptoms, and change over time. Standardized outcome measures complement clinical examination and support clinical decision-making, treatment planning, reassessment, communication, documentation, and evaluation of rehabilitation outcomes. They may assess body functions and structures, activity, and participation and are broadly classified as patient-reported or performance-based measures. Appropriate selection requires consideration of reliability, validity, responsiveness, interpretability, feasibility, clinical utility, and relevance to the patient's condition and treatment goals. Interpretation should consider measurement variability and clinically meaningful change, including minimal detectable change and minimal clinically important difference. Despite their recognized value, routine implementation remains inconsistent because of time constraints, inadequate training, limited availability, administrative barriers, and concerns regarding clinical relevance. Effective implementation requires education, standardized administration, workflow integration, appropriate documentation, feedback, and continuing support. Outcome measures across musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and acute-care physiotherapy can strengthen patient-centred assessment and clinical reasoning. Future practice should emphasize standardization, practical integration, patient-centred interpretation, and cultural and linguistic suitability.
