Load Frequency Control of Single Area Power System through PID Controller
(Book Rivers, 2026) Mohammad Atif Siddiqui, Adab Ishtiyaq
This book chapter addresses the design, simulation, and optimization of Load Frequency Control (LFC) loops in single-area power systems to maintain system frequency within permissible limits during load disturbances. It establishes the linearized transfer function models of essential LFC components, including the speed governor, turbine, and generator-load system under droop conditions. Through MATLAB-based simulations, the transient and steady-state responses of an uncompensated LFC system are evaluated, demonstrating that unmanaged load variations result in undesirable oscillations and a non-zero steady-state frequency error. To resolve these limitations, the chapter investigates both conventional tuning methodologies—such as direct synthesis and approximate model matching—and soft computing approaches, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA). A comparative performance analysis across multiple test scenarios involving non-reheat and reheat turbines outlines the impact of controller parameters on peak values, settling times, and integral square errors (ISE). Additionally, the chapter explores the challenges introduced by physical non-linearities, specifically Generation Rate Constraints (GRC), and evaluates anti-GRC configurations to overcome overshoot and prolonged settling times. The findings confirm that optimizing advanced controllers (PI, PID, and PIDA) via metaheuristic algorithms significantly enhances power system stability by delivering smoother, faster, and more robust dynamic frequency restoration.
