The Transformative Role of Artificial Intelligence in Bioprocess Technology
(Natals Publication, 2025) Sujeet Pratap Singh, RaviK. Deshwal, Imran Hussain
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in bioprocess technology, revolutionizing both upstream and downstream processing in biological manufacturing. This comprehensive chapter explores the integration of AI technologies, including machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision, across the entire bioprocessing workflow. We examine how AI enhances cell line development, media optimization, and bioreactor control in upstream processing, while also optimizing chromatography, filtration, and purification processes downstream. The chapter details the implementation of AI in quality control and Process Analytical Technology (PAT), highlighting real-time monitoring and predictive capabilities. Special attention is given to the role of AI in scale-up operations and technology transfer, along with the emerging concept of digital twins in bioprocessing. Through detailed case studies and practical examples, we demonstrate how AI-driven approaches have achieved significant improvements in process efficiency, product quality, and manufacturing consistency. The chapter also addresses current challenges and limitations while providing insights into future perspectives of AI integration in bioprocess technology. This work serves as a comprehensive resource for bioprocess engineers, data scientists, and biotechnology professionals seeking to understand and implement AI solutions in biological manufacturing processes.
