Liquid Crystals as Active Functional Media for Advanced Plasmonic Applications
(Book Rivers, 2026) Syed Salman Ahmad Warsi
Liquid crystals (LCs) have emerged as highly versatile active functional media for advanced plasmonic applications owing to their unique combination of optical anisotropy, tunability, and responsiveness to external stimuli. By integrating plasmonic nanostructures with liquid crystal matrices, dynamic control over localized surface plasmon resonances and surface plasmon polaritons can be achieved through electric, magnetic, thermal, or optical fields. This synergy enables the development of reconfigurable photonic devices with enhanced light matter interactions, improved sensing capabilities, and adaptive optical functionalities. The chapter discusses the fundamental principles governing LC plasmonic interactions, recent advances in hybrid LC plasmonic systems, and their applications in tunable sensors, optical switches, modulators, displays, and nanophotonic devices.

Temperature-Dependent Optical Properties of Pure and Anthraquinone-Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal E-24
(Book Rivers, 2025) Syed Salman Ahmad Warsi
This chapter presents a comparative analysis of the optical properties of a pure nematic liquid crystal mixture (E-24) and its anthraquinone dye-doped counterpart. The temperaturedependent behavior of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices no and ne has been systematically investigated for both samples. The results reveal that the dye-doped sample exhibits comparatively lower refractive indices than the pure nematic mixture. Furthermore, the thermal variation of the optical order parameter has been examined, indicating a higher degree of orientational order in the doped sample. Possible mechanisms responsible for this enhancement are discussed in detail. In addition, variations in birefringence and optical transmittance with temperature have been explored, providing deeper insights into the influence of dye doping on the optical anisotropy of the system.

Ferroelectricity in Liquid Crystals and its Applications
(Book Rivers, 2025) Syed Salman Ahmad Warsi
This chapter offers a thoughtful overview of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), guiding readers through their journey from initial discovery to their current role in cutting-edge display technologies. It begins by introducing the basic physical concepts behind ferroelectricity in liquid crystals, particularly focusing on how chirality and layered molecular arrangements in chiral smectic phases give rise to their unique behavior. These materials stand out for their spontaneous polarization, rapid response, and bistable states—features that make them ideal candidates for high-performance display applications. We then revisit some of the key breakthroughs in the field, especially the development of the surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) configuration in the 1980s. This innovation marked a turning point by addressing alignment challenges and unlocking the potential for practical, stable devices. The chapter also explores more recent advancements, including efforts to fine-tune material properties, optimize alignment layers, and develop driving schemes that support fast switching and smooth gray scale rendering. In closing, we highlight how ongoing research continues to push the boundaries of what FLCs can do, positioning them as vital components in the future of responsive and energy-efficient display technologies.
