Item Behavioral Change Strategies for Promoting Sustainable Clothing: Overcoming Barriers(SAAR Publications, 2026) Jyotsana ShuklaIn recent times, fashion has captured the imagination of young and old alike. We are today living in a world where fast fashion is something we all like to follow. The traditional and minimalist thinking in the context of fashion, has given way to the thinking that “the more the better” and to some extent to “hoard as much as possible”. Thus, the paper discusses how, globally, the fashion industry contributes immensely to environmental pollution and degradation. It also elaborates on how it leads to social inequalities. There is an urgent need to pay attention to sustainable fashion and clothing culture. One also realises that there are many barriers which come in the way of adapting sustainable clothing practices. There is wide gap between the attitude towards sustainable clothing practices and actual sustainable clothing actions. The present paper elaborates on these barriers that obstruct the behavior intended toward sustainable fashion. The paper draws on textile technology, environmental psychology, consumer behavior, and sustainability research to explore the barriers and the choices that are available to us for sustainability in the fad mad world. The paper delves on barriers such as costs, pricing, accessibility, psychological resistance, green washing, etc. The paper emphasises strategies at the policy level, institutional level, community and individual levels, to bring long lasting behavioral change in all the stakeholders in the fashion world. This will lead to making sustainable and environment friendly clothing a part and parcel of fashion industry. The textile engineers, textile manufacturers, textile designers, the consumers and the society, all need to make sustainable fashion the preferred fashion by choice.Item Emotional Health and Emotional Well Being(The Lawgical Junction and MJS Publishing House., 2024) Jyotsana ShuklaThe present chapter distinguishes between emotional health and mental health. Extreme weather events like heat waves, storms, droughts, and dangerous flooding bring destruction in their wake. Damage to infrastructure and other built environments is easily visible after an extreme weather event. Extreme weather events bring physical injury and death, creating mental health consequences in their wake. A new realization has captured the imagination of the world, that of extreme weather events along with disease pandemics, like the COVID-19 crisis. Weather extremes and disease pandemics, together, present challenging problems particularly for governments and communities alike. Poor and vulnerable populations are the most affected. The capacity of a community to plan and prepare for extreme weather and pandemics is a new and important determinant of health consequences and their severity. Existing public health and safety systems are significant factors in responding to such combined emergencies. Other factors include the age, gender, education, medical conditions, and socioeconomic status of the populations affected. Such double events affect most, if not all, elements of life, including agriculture yields and the long-term food security of nations. Therefore, governments, community institutions, nongovernmental organizations, international agencies, and individual citizens must consider preparation for all such combined extreme events a priority. This chapter presents an overview of mental health consequences of the combined effects of a pandemic (COVID-19) and extreme weather events—heat waves, droughts, floods, rains, and their unpredictable intermittency—when they happen together. Mental health following such combined events is a challenge. Government, community, and agencies extant, rush to help, to deal effectively with the present and future combined events and their known and potential consequences. Best practices in response to this combined, continuing, extreme weather events with a pandemic are also considered.
