Item European Best Practices to Mitigate Air Pollution: A Review(Springer Nature Switzerland, 2022) Kaushik, Geetanjali; Khalid,Monowar Alam; Ali, Nusrat; Ahmad, Syed AqeelAir pollution has become a global issue. It is of significance to identify the best practices that have helped countries in Europe to combat the issues of air pollution. Eight cities from Europe are discussed in this chapter to understand best practices for air pollution mitigation at city level. These include Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin city, London, Paris, Prague, and Rotterdam. Each city highlights the importance of mitigating road-related air pollution as it is the major contributor of air pollution in urban areas. Various interventions such as traffic and mobility management, parking management, low emissions zone, congestion charge, cycling, and walking infrastructure are discussed in this chapter. A comparative table gives a brief outlook on these best practices that Indian cities can draw insights from. However, no one solution works for all cities, and hence each city needs a tailored solution based on the analysis of air pollution and major contributors of air pollution in the city.Item Promoting Blue-Green Infrastructure in Urban Spaces Through Citizen Science Initiatives(Springer, Singapore, 2022) Murthy, Indu K.; Khalid,Monowar AlamThe compounded effects of urbanization and climate change are taking a serious toll on rapidly growing urban spaces around the world. Blue-green infrastructure offers a host of opportunities and benefits for addressing the multiple challenges of environment, social well-being and climate change. Cities can mobilize key actors for crosscutting and inclusive action, bringing diverse stakeholders such as national governments, private sector, civil society and common citizens together. This chapter discusses the role of citizen science which is now seen as a tool for educating citizens on scientific research, engaging them where possible and considering views and expectations of different stakeholders. Citizen science can play a role at different stages of development of urban spaces, and they include (i) project demand, (ii) project design, (iii) project implementation and delivery and (iv) project monitoring and maintenance. For facilitating and promoting enhanced participation of citizens through the entire project cycle of blue-green infrastructure, appropriate policy instruments, ranging from legal to market-based to communication to organizational, are needed.Item Biodiversity and Biomass Carbon Dynamics: Insights from Long-Term Monitoring in the Western Ghats(Springer, Singapore, 2022) Murthy, Indu K.; Khalid,Monowar Alam; Sathyanarayan, Vani; Beerappa, M.; Bhat, Savithri; Prashant, M.; Iyer, Sudha; Ravindranath, N. H.Management and conservation of forests are subject to pressures and disturbances. Planning and management of forests for conservation require information on the biodiversity, socio-economic dependence, forest biomass, and carbon. Long-term studies help generate such information on the structure and function of forests. The current study was conducted in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka in the Western Ghats region. The dynamics of forest ecosystems was studied through permanent plots of 1 ha in the evergreen and deciduous forest types, and the socio-economic aspects through household surveys in villages in the proximity of the permanent plots, for assessing the dependence on forests. The biomass estimates for the evergreen forest plots were 301–341 t/ha and those for deciduous forest plots were 258–336 t/ha. This is despite large dependence of households in the range of 10–48% on the forests for food, fodder, firewood, manure, and other NTFPs. Long-term data on the growth and mortality rates of economically important species, forest carbon balance, and the impact of climate change on forest composition are central to effective management. However, this information is rarely integrated within the policymaking process. This data could be utilized through integration at three points—the policy window, the decision window, and the networking window. Creating these policy, decision and networking windows will allow use of information from permanent plots for effective and efficient management of forest ecosystems, making them resilient to systemic and chronic shocks—both climate and non-climate.Item Perceptions of School Students Regarding Air Pollution: A Study of Aurangabad City in Maharashtra, India.(Springer Nature, Switzerland AG, 2022) Kaushik, Geetanjali; Khalid,Monowar Alam; Mumtaz, Neha; Izhar, TabishOver the last decade, air pollution has become a global issue on account of anthropogenic activities and has resulted in severe health issues and has reduced public’s subjective well-being. Awareness and behavioral change can go a long way in mitigating the adverse impacts of air pollution. This chapter focuses on assessing the perceptions of students in the city of Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra in India toward air pollution and provides insights into students’ perceptions about air pollution in the city, factors responsible for it, and the role they can play in controlling it. Awareness of air pollution at an age as young as 11–12 provides a promising step toward minimizing hazardous effects on the community. All the students believed the air quality in their neighborhood to be good. Majority of the respondents in our study confirmed vehicular exhaust as the main cause of pollution in their communities followed by smoke from dumpsites. Further all the students agreed that they would take measures to curb air pollution which is a positive step toward reducing it and minimizing health impacts.Item Birds as Nature's Marvel(Academic Publishers and Distributors, 2024) Khalid,Monowar Alam; Khan, Mohsina; Khalid, ShaafayItem Wildlife Conservation and Tribal Communities: A Perspective(Bharti Publications, 2024) Khalid,Monowar Alam; Khan, MohsinaItem Blue-Green Infrastructure across Asian countries(Springer, 2022) Dasgupta, Rajesh ed.; Khalid,Monowar AlamItem Forest Dynamics and Conservation : science, innovations and policies(Springer, 2022) Manoj Kumar ed.; Khalid,Monowar AlamItem Handbook of Environmental Materials Management(Springer, 2022) Khalid,Monowar Alam; Neha Mumtaz; Tabish Izhar; Syed Aqeel Ahmad; Nusrat AliItem Phytochemicals and their Antilipotoxic Effect(Aargon Press, New Delhi, 2021) Mishra, Chetna; Khalid,Monowar Alam; Mahdi, Abbas Ali
