Item Birds As Bioindicators of Environmental Health(M/S Academic Publishers & Distributors, Lucknow, India., 2025) Mohsina Khan, Shaafay Khalid, Monowar Alam KhalidAs we walk through our forests, fields and urban parks, a symphony greets our ears the cheerful chirping of birds. These winged wonders are not just a delight to our senses, but also the sentinels of our environment. Birds, with their vibrant plumage and melodious songs, serve as vital indicators of the health of our ecosystems. From the majestic cagles soaring high above the mountains to the tiny warblers flitting through the underbrush, birds inhabit every corner of our planet. Their presence, abundance, and diversity provide us with a window into the state of our environment. When we see a landscape teeming with birdlife, we can be assured that the ecosystem is thriving. However, the absence or decline of bird populations signals underlying problems that warrant our attention. Many studies reveal that bird communities are ideal bioindicators for detecting changes in an area, especially in evaluating the impact of existing structures. They assist us examine environmental conditions at a small cost. They provide important ecological services such as natural pest control, pollination and seed distribution. They are much more sensitive to environmental disturbances than other animals. All of the food we consume and the resources we use originate from nature itself, thus ecosystem health is important to everyone. Similarly, ecosystem health indicators are measurements that assist us in determining where we should take action to restore ecosystem health and its benefits.
