Item An Introduction to Chalcone Derivatives as Antimicrobial Agents(Book Rivers, 2026) Chandra Shekhar Yadav, Minaxi B. LohaniChalcone derivatives, a prominent class of organic compounds belonging to the flavonoid family. have garnered significant attention for their diverse biological activities, particularly their antimicrobial potential. Structurally characterized by an a, B-unsaturated carbonyl system, chalcones exhibit remarkable versatility in modulating biological targets. These abstract highlights the exploration of chalcone derivatives as effective antimicrobial agents against bacterial and fungal pathogens. Chalcone derivatives are essential in various fields of natural disciplines. These are plant-derived polyphenolic compounds that display several biological activities and play significant roles in research and medicine. Chalcones have been reported to have many therapeutic activities, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cytotoxic, antitumor, antimalarial, etc. Therefore, many compounds with different medicinal properties have been developed recently based on the chalcone skeleton. Structural modifications, such as the incorporation of electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents, significantly enhance their potency and spectrum of activity. Moreover, the synergistic effects of chalcones when combined with conventional antibiotics underscore their potential in overcoming drug resistance.Item Natural Bioactives for Skin Therapeutics: Cydonia oblonga and Cyanobacteria-Based Approaches(Book Rivers, 2026) Anjeeta Singh, Kaiser YounisScytonemin, a lipid-soluble indole-alkaloid pigment synthesized by certain cyanobacteria, has emerged as a potent natural UVscreening compound with strong antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Its unique chemical structure enables absorption across a broad UV spectrum, particularly in the UVA range, making it highly effective in preventing oxidative damage and photoaging. This chapter explores the mechanisms of UV protection offered by scytonemin and the various strategies for its integration into topical skin formulations. Special emphasis is placed on nanoemulsion-based delivery systems, which improve solubility, enhance dermal penetration, and ensure stability. By combining natural photoprotective efficacy with advanced formulation technologies, scytonemin offers a promising alternative to conventional synthetic sunscreens, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable, biocompatible skincare solutions. The chapter also addresses formulation parameters, safety profiles, and regulatory considerations, paving the way for the development of next-generation cosmeceuticals rooted in nature and supported by science.Item Antimicrobial, Antioxidant and Anticancer Potential of Andrographis Paniculata: Phytochemical Insights and Biomedical Implications(Book Rivers, 2026) Hina Khatoon, Mohammad Haneef, Salman AkhtarOxidative stress and cancer continue to pose major challenges to global health, contributing significantly to illness and death worldwide. Growing concerns over the adverse effects of synthetic drugs have intensified interest in natural, plant-based remedies. This chapter presents an in-depth overview of the antioxidant and anticancer potential of Andrographis paniculata, commonly referred to as the "King of Bitters." It delves into the biochemical basis of oxidative stress, the therapeutic relevance of antioxidants, and the crucial role of natural compounds in cancer prevention and therapy. Additionally, the chapter discusses the phytochemical constituents, traditional applications, and pharmacological benefits of A. paniculata, particularly its anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal, and anticancer effects. Emphasis is placed on the need for further targeted research to substantiate its clinical effectiveness and safety, underscoring its promise in the development of innovative therapeutic agents.
