Item Recent Advances in Sustainable Agriculture: Biochemical Conversion of Agriculture Wastes to Biofuels(Book Rivers, 2026) Ayush Saxena, Fouziya Parveen, Akhtar Hussain, Mohammad AshfaqueIncreasing global warming affects mankind drastically, even other living beings face severe problems. Continuous usage of fossil fuels leads to air pollution, which contains several harmful particles that can cause negative impacts on the environment and the health of humans. Burning fossil fuels and utilizing them in different activities also lead to their depletion from the earth. To overcome such problems and focus on sustainability, many countries are now utilizing agricultural wastes to produce second-generation biofuels, which act as an alternative to fossil fuels. Conversion of these agricultural wastes to various biofuels is done through multiple approaches, out of which the main and environment-friendly approach is the biochemical conversion of biomass that can produce bioethanol and biogas via fermentation and anaerobic digestion, respectively. Biochemical conversion is a multi-step process with low to zero emission of pollutants.Item Integrated Algal Engineering Approaches for Bioremediation, Bioenergy, and Industrial Applications: Current Scenario and Future Directions(Springer, Singapore, 2026) Shaily Mishra, Arpit Srivastava, Paras Koshe, Chandan Mahata, Reena Vishvakarma, Ashutosh PandeyIn the current scenario, algal biomass has been perceived as a potential candidate for carbon sequestration and better substitute for environmental quality deteriorating toxic fossil fuels. Genetic and metabolic engineering are the highly advanced emerging technologies having great potential to improve the ability of algal cells to perform with increased efficiency. Recent advancements in genetic and metabolic engineering have significantly enhanced the potential of algal biomass for carbon sequestration, wastewater phycoremediation and sustainable bioenergy production. The Cutting-edge technologies such as CRISPR/Cas genome editing, TALENs and RNA interference have accelerated the precise manipulation of algal genomes leading to improved metabolic pathways for higher yields of biofuels and value-added bioactive compounds. Integrating synthetic biology with omics techniques has facilitated the engineering of the algal strains with increased efficiency in removing pollutants from wastewater and generated industrially relevant products. This chapter focuses on the recent advancements in metabolic engineering approaches to improve algal biomass for enhancing their ability of wastewater phycoremediation, bioenergy and industrial applicability of harvested algal biomass and several value-added bioactive compounds from algal biomass.Item Parthenium hysterophorus: From Weed to Eco-friendly Solution for Biogas and Waste Water Treatment(Taylor and Francis, CRC Press, 2026) Shazia Qamar , Syed Khalida Izhar, Uzma AfaqParthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae), also known as carrot grass or congress grass, is one of the most prolific invasive weeds, endangering agricultural landscapes and natural ecosystems. This notorious plant has recently been shown to have a wide range of innovative uses, such as the elimination of aquatic weeds and the removal of dye and heavy metals from contaminated water. P. hysterophorus has been used for nano-catalytic gasification, which uses Co and Ni as nanocatalysts to produce biofuels (biogas, biodiesel, and charcoal). These weeds contain minimum nutritional values but can be used effectively in production of biofuels. It is also added to cattle dung as an additive to produce biogas, with the prevalence of this weed and the vast number of cattle in India, P. hysterophorus should be given careful consideration as a substrate for anaerobic digestion-based biogas production. Heavy metal pollution of the environment is becoming a worldwide problem. Wastewater contaminated by heavy metals such as chromium, nickel and cadmium need to be treated using affordable alternative technologies or absorbents, particularly in developing countries like India. P. hysterophorus is found to be an effective adsorbent of Cr, Ni and Cd. It is used to generate activated carbon, which is a very effective adsorbent material produced through chemical activation using concentrated H2SO4. The concerns with industrial wastewater contamination have led to an increase in the use of activated carbon made from P. hysterophorus for wastewater treatment.
