Abstract

The 1990s saw the emergence of queer theory, a critical theory, from women's studies and queer studies. This multidisciplinary discipline studies and challenges how society defines gender and sexuality. From women's studies and queer studies, queer theory is a branch of post-structuralist critical theory that first appeared in the early 1990s. An interdisciplinary subject called queer theory encourages people to view the world from different perspectives. It is a method of thought that combats social injustice, questions established academic methodologies and destroys conventional beliefs about gender and sexual identities. Depending on how it is used, the phrase "queer theory" can signify several things. However, generally speaking, it refers to the study and theorization of gender and sexual behaviors that are not exclusively heterosexual and that question the idea that heterosexual desire is "normal."[5] As sociology moved toward social constructivism, queer theorists frequently criticized essentialist perspectives on gender and sexuality. Instead, they frequently examine such ideas as social and cultural processes by scrutinizing the classifications, dichotomies, and linguistic expressions that are purportedly used to represent them.
