Abstract
This chapter aims to explore the intricate relationship between consciousness and artificial intelligence (AI), encouraging critical thinking about the future of Al and the nature of human experience.
It explores what consciousness means focusing on awareness, emotions, thoughts, and self-reflection and contrasts this with the capabilities of modern Al systems. It presents both optimistic and skeptical views about whether machines can ever be conscious, highlighting theories such as Global Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, and Higher-Order Thought Theory. It also discusses the ethical, social, and philosophical implications of creating conscious machines, including issues of rights, responsibility, and human identity. While current Al lacks true consciousness, the chapter highlights the growing importance of this discussion as technology continues to advance rapidly.
