Panjwani, Prof. (Dr.) Adnan Khan Lodi, Dr. E. AhmadThis paper investigates the psychological impact of English- language learning. While English is often viewed as a gateway to global opportunity, its role as the primary medium of instruction frequently creates a "linguistic divide" that marginalizes students from non-English speaking backgrounds. This study explores how the pressure to achieve proficiency in a "prestige language" contributes to anxiety, identity crises, and decreased self-esteem among Indian students. While English proficiency offers social and professional advantages, it can also contribute to stress and emotional distress, particularly among non-native learners. Conversely, successful language acquisition can enhance confidence and mental well-being. This study analyzes existing literature on ELL’s psychological effects and offer recommendations for minimizing negative impacts and maximizing the mental health benefits of language learning.en-USEnglish Language learningMental HealthIdentity crisislanguage anxietyself-esteemImpact of English Language Learning on Mental Health and Exploring the Relationship with Language Anxiety and Self EsteemBook chapter
